The UK was the foremost developer of wind power for many years. More recently it has been overtaken by China.
WIND POWER
Coal was the largest fuel for UK power generation until 2014. Gas supplanted coal and is still the largest source for power generation. Wind is now the second largest source for power generation.
Gas is the main back-up to wind. The chart shows the source for the week starting Friday 13 October 2023. When the wind dropped on Monday 16 October 2023 it was gas that picked up the supply. The chart also shows the drop in demand on Sunday 15 October 2023.
The role of gas as an important source of back-up to renewable energy is shown in the latest International Gas Union Global Gas Report 2023 which illustrates this.
